Future Session #7: Exclusion by Technology @ The Hague Humanity Hub
Sep 25 @ 15:30 – 18:30

In 2018, The Spindle and HumanityX (Centre for Innovation of Leiden University) collaborate in organising a series of monthly inspirational working sessions for our mutual communities! In these sessions, we’ll explore the relevance of (technological) trends for the future of development cooperation. The sessions are high in energy and always involve an expert. See what’s going on and get more grip on the implications and ideas that would work!

In this session, Tin Geber, the new social innovation expert with Hivos, will be giving a workshop on exclusion by technology.

The following themes will be discussed during this session:

– Exploring the reasons and trends behind the widening gap of techno-literacy.
– Analysing patterns of techno-colonialism in development.
– Identifying power dynamics and politics of data production, ownership and use.
– Learning about implicit and explicit methods of exclusion: from algorithmic bias to the Mosaic Effect.
– Jointly exploring subversion and deconstruction of techno-colonialism.

What can you expect from it?

– Increasing understanding of new (technology) trends.
– Identifying potential applications and use cases with real-life examples.
– Knowing how to start leveraging these opportunities for your organisation.
– Knowing trajectories to bring ideas further, the networks and methods to do so.

Location: The Hague Humanity Hub, Fluwelen Burgwal 58, The Hague
Date: Tuesday the 25th of September
Time: 15.30h-18.30h with networking drinks after!

How To Start A Label: Business Development @ Stroom Den Haag
Sep 25 @ 18:00 – 20:30

Orisun is organizing a peer-to-peer workshop at Stroom Den Haag from September until December for designers who are planning to start their own label. After the art academy / fashion school, we noticed that many alumni do not have sufficient knowledge about business development and sustainability. In order to increase their chances in the industry and to build up knowledge, Orisun offers a solution in cooperation with its partners. Within our course: ‘How to start a label’, we will inform and guide designers with their starting label.

How do you choose a legal form, what are the advantages and disadvantages of your choice? How do you arrange a registration at the Chamber of Commerce? How do you get an overview of your income and how does that work with VAT and invoices?
In this workshop you will gain insight into all these issues. Based on an explanation of entrepreneurial forms, we will discuss your personal situation. You will also learn how to write invoices, calculate VAT and make a VAT return.

Maud is a musician / composer and bookkeeper. She knows exactly how the practice works.

Every month we will be discussing a different theme. September is all about entrepreneurship. Together with Cultuur+Ondernemen we will offer 2 workshops this month and a free consultation hour for a limited number of participants.

18 september 2018 – Finance (Cultuur+Ondernemen)
25 september 2018 – Business development (Cultuur+Ondernemen)
28 september 2018 – Free consultation Cultuur+Ondernemen)

Future Syria: a view from women on the inside @ Humanity House
Sep 25 @ 20:00 – 21:30

While many Syrians are still struggling with horrors, occupation and continued displacement, some Syrian refugees have also started returning. But to what country and future to they return? Five Syrian women from a range of backgrounds, all fighting for journalists and civil society to be heard, are in The Hague to talk about the state of their country and the position of women in it.

Did Assad win? Is it really safe enough to go back as some media say? What should be the Dutch position in the rebuilding of their country and how can Dutch policy makers and NGO’s best support female activists? The women who lived under IS rule, regime rule and outside Syria the last few years share their stories and opinions and show short films on women activism in Syria. All of them suffered oppression but are still working to build a better Syria through a variety of civil society initiatives.

Inspire the Students @ Academic Floors
Sep 29 @ 12:30 – 18:30

On this Saturday afternoon, alumni and students will meet at LUC to share their experiences about internships, master programmes, and the working field. This networking event will be closed with a borrel to connect all students and alumni present! To give the students a general idea of what you can do with an LUC degree, a keynote panel of alumni will introduce a variety of roads our alumni have taken after their life in The Hague. However, both alumni and students have more specific questions and ideas when it comes to the things that interest them mostly. Therefore, we will provide for two break-out slots catering your academic and professional questions! This way you can attend the break-out sessions discussing your top two themes and have room to discuss the remaining theme during the drink. The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs Career Services will have a stand near Coasters so you can directly inquire about career/internship opportunities.
