The Beyond Arts Committee exists to showcase the creative talent and the artistic passions of the LUC community. It is a stage and a resource, a space where people can come together and make something long lasting and meaningful flourish.
Beyond Arts is a community of artists and creators that share ideas and have fun. Every member of Beyond Arts has equal status in the committee, as an authority on their talent, and the board members are there to try and facilitate that talent, using the time, space and resources they have, to play with, and make something of it.
It’s also a committee that wants to give people the opportunity to learn, as well as give up some of their time to the arts. Dance classes, theatre workshops, choir, bands, reading groups, drawing classes, poetry slams, meditation workshops and much more, are all on the agenda if we have the people who want to participate and get involved.
The Beyond Arts at the end of last year created a home. It was a place where everyone had to bring something that was important to them, create for other people and build something that LUC had never seen before. The Common Room was transformed into a giant play-house and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. When those objects where taken away, the members took part of Beyond Arts with them, back into their personal sphere. This is something that sharing our art does, it breaks barriers, forms bonds and creates beauty. ‘Art allows you to run away, without ever leaving home,’ was a message I found chalked on a pavement last night, and it’s true.
Taking the time for practical, extra curricular lessons outside the rhythm of academic life is a great way to get as much out of one’s university career as possible. As Martijn Otten said, the original Chair of BYA, “When you look back at university, it won’t be the paper you wrote in your fifth reading week that you remember, it will be the times like this, the music, the drama, the friendships, the parties and the arts, the moments where you made something happen and were a part of something great, that will stay with you.” You can understand this by experiencing the unique vibe of a BYA party.
The committee is large and therefore, split into seven sub committees. ‘The Art of Music, The Art of Dance, Performing Arts, Fine Arts, Literary Arts, Art and Spirit and Administration.’ The diverse range of activities means that you have to work with the respective sub-committee chairs if you want to produce, help with a project, or be part of a group.
