History and mission statement
Fortuna is the official student association of Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) and was established at the 16th of May 2011. The board of 2010-2011 has created the legal and organizational foundations of Fortuna. This year the board is able to focus on stimulating student initiatives and improving the LUC community.
The aim of Fortuna is to represent the interest of all students enrolled at LUC.
This will be done by:
- Maintaining contact between members of the association, the LUC student-board, the students-staff committee, the board of studies, LUC staff and LUC board.
- Promoting the development and ensuring the continuity of committees set up by members of the association.
- Representing the student body as a whole to the outside world.
- Organising activities to broaden the horizon of LUC students outside the curriculum.
Sub-Committees
The association Fortuna includes all social and academic student initiatives, titled sub-committees, and is overseen and guided by the Fortuna Board. A few examples are Activities Committee, Act Aware Committee, Travel Committee and the Film Committee. The sub-committees play a big role in enriching student life at LUC and its number is still expanding.
The Fortuna Board
General information
The Fortuna Board meets every week to discuss current student issues and the activities of the committees. The board consists of seven members: the chair, secretary, treasurer, academic representative, board member and head of the Housing Committee, board member and head of the Student-Staff Committee and general board member.
Although the tasks of the chair, secretary and treasurer speak for itself, the other positions need some more explanation.
Academic Representative
The academic representative functions as the link between Leiden University College and the Fortuna Board with special regard to academic affairs. Its main task is to discuss and enhance the structural quality of the academic program. The academic representative operates in the Board of Studies. The Board of Studies consists of the Dean, the Educational Director, a LUC Staff Representative and the Academic Representative.
Housing Committee
Board member and head of the Housing Committee functions as the link between the Housing Committee and the Fortuna Board. The Housing Committee is a sub-committee of Fortuna and is concerned with all matters related to student housing, ranging from the enforcement of Housing Rules to contact with the lessors of the buildings. Additionally to being the link between the Housing Committee and the Fortuna Board, this board member is also involved with the decision-making, the communication with Sub-Committees and the initiation of events (as a regular board member).
Student-Staff Committee
Board member and head of the Student-Staff Committee (SSC) functions as the link between the SSC and the Fortuna Board. The SSC consists of both faculty and students and has an independent position within LUC. It is the primary forum for students to voice opinions and seek to influence the quality of education at LUC. The Committee offers the Dean solicited and unsolicited advice on all matters on college level relating to teaching and education. Another of its tasks is executing the evaluations of courses. Next to his duties as being one of the six student representatives in the SSC, this board member is involved with the decision-making, the communication with Sub-Committees and the initiation of events.
